Hi,

I've seen that the Architect/Enterprise trial of JBuilder 2006 is
available for some time. Because the huge size and the fact that
I only need the desktop (J2SDK Standard Edition) features, when
can I expect the Foundation version of the product? I don't like
to download the hundreds of megabytes that I don't use. There is
one positive side of the huge trial: after expiration the trial
becomes the foundation, however hundreds of megabytes become
useless.

I'm waiting and many others with me for that economical download
because JBuilder Foundation has been very rich since version 9!
From version 9 it resembles Kylix Professional considering
features!

It'll be out... when it's out. Borland never announces these things.
Historically, it's been about a month or so after the official product
release, but that is no guarantee.

The only advice I can offer is ... keep checking.

I think it will be faster if you start downloading EE edition now than
if you wait for foundation edition to appear.

Hi,

I've downloaded the mentioned EE trial and my EE trial license
has expired and now it's a Foundation version. Is there a way to
get rid of the expired EE bulk that I don't use or is there a way
to use it programmatically (read: without making use of the IDE)?

I went through this exercise with JBX and JB2005, and realized that it's
basically pointless (unless you're worried about disk space). Just wait
for the Foundation version to be released, and install it then.

For fun, you can try playing with the options in
<JBInstallDir>/bin/jbuilder.config..

I'm not worried about disk space, but I don't want unusable litter
left behind on my harddisk. Trials that have expired are litter,
since they have no longer a function and should be deleted.
The Foundation Edition is the right one for me and hopefully it
will be released for downloading.

Well, it's not *litter*, in that if you remove the JB2006 Ent
installation, it'll remove those bits.

And it will be, probably in a month or two. For JB2005, I seem to
remember it took a couple or three months from the Ent trial download
release date..

I won't delete it until the Foundation Edition comes here, since
it's now a foundation edition. :-)

Three months is a long time gap. Why? Updates?

I've been lurking on this thread and began to
ask the same question: why so long to release
the freebie? Maybe I'm suddenly starting to
think like a marketing person, but it just
occurred to me that maybe the idea is that
forcing you to use Enterprise will expose you
to all that you are missing, and once it's gone,
you'll want it so much so that you'll buy it.
If they just give you the freebie right away,
you'll take it, just like all those who have
taken Eclipse, and never realize how good things
could really be.

Paul,

I've got mixed emotions: on the first side it's not bad to see all
the possibilities of the enterprise trial, but I only need the
desktop stuff. The Foundation Edition is an excellent tool to
write software for the desktop.

I contacted borland sales in Australia/New Zealand and they told me in no uncertan terms that there would NOT be a developer trial download added to the website, that the enteroprise trial was the only option.

I personally don't believe him, I think that would be an insane marketing choice... It will piss off too many developers for no good reason.

Having said that though, the enterprise trial has been there now since the beginning of September and no new editions are posted yet... over 3 months so far, while in the past it has been 1-2 months to get the next one added :(
