Upgrade verification

I'm a long time Borland (since Turbo C 1.0) and JBuilder (since it was
bundled with C++ Builder), buying the commercial versions. However in
recent years I've bought the academic since I haven't been using it for
commercial use and qualify for the academic license. Now I want to do
some commercial developement and buy the commercial version again.
Question is, if I buy the Upgrade version, will I have to verify with my
old copy? Unfortunately I didn't save any of the CDs from back when I
bought commercial versions. I'm obviously not trying to cheat Borland
here as I meet the requirements for the upgrade version. I know the old
upgrade versions didn't need verification, but Borland has been more
restrictive of late.

As I recall, they can check their records. Almost all JBuilder's have
had some sort of "registration" process, and AFAIK they've kept all
those old records.

You should just call their direct sales number and see.

I was able to install JB2005 Dev on a machine which had never had a version of JBuilder on it.
I did have Delphi 7 installed on it for a short while last year but that too has been long gone.

Borland's upgrade policy has always relied at least in part on honesty rather than rigorous checks during install time (or worse, having to hand over the installation media being upgraded from at purchase time) that other suppliers do.

While this may cost them some income from unscrupulous people buying upgrade versions as the full thing (and maybe unscrupulous resellers removing the "upgrade" stickers) overall it's probably worth it as it generates happy customers and reduces the manufacturing overhead (only one CD set per product, the only difference being a sticker on the box or wrapping).
