Hi ,

I am a Delphi user. I want to move into Java Development. The applications
that I develop are mainly Database intensive applications. I was into
Client-Server with Delphi but now I want to get into netbased develpoment
and X-Platform too.
I was seriously considering JBuilder, until I came across an article that
says that Borland is planning to sell off JBuilder. Is this true ? If so
what is the next best option for me ?

Warm Regards
Allan

It is true. Borland is planning to get rid of their entire development tools division, including both Delphi and JBuilder.

For now, I'd say JBuilder is a stable platform that will serve you well for years.
Even if development were halted you'd be unlikely to need to change to something else for several years to come, long enough to recover the investment in your new tooling.
It would certainly be a good way to transfer from Delphi to Java, as you keep a similar working environment, thus lessening the initial impact of working in a new programming language.

For future safety, you might consider another editing environment. IDEA seems to be a very well received IDE, though I can't personally recommend it as I've not tried it (yet).
No other IDE comes even close to JBuilder in out of the box functionality and userfriendliness (nor in similarity to Delphi when it comes to the user experience).
Eclipse can, with a load of plugins, configuration changes, and addons) be made to come reasonably close.
Netbeans derived IDEs I personally avoid as too slow and poor featured (though the latest releases seem to address some of that).

From what I see and read in Internet regarding this spin off I'm sure
that these plans are published from Borland because Borland is still the
company that owns these products but the are product of the Developer
Tools Group which more and more separates its self from the rest of
Borland divisions.

So actually this road map is something that the people from DTG (DevCo)
think should be the direction for JBuilder future.

They actually use this to attract the buyers.

Without any idea where they want and think product should go they
actually can't attract any buyers/investors.

Thanks.
What would be a good place to start JBuilder.
I have read some e-books on core Java.
Are there any good e-books or simple sample programs to start with JBuilder?

There are samples and tutorials that come with JBuilder, and they are a
great place to start - see the "Help" menu.
